The Sindh Health Minister refused to take pressure from the baby food industry on the proposed amendments in the Protection and Promotion of Breastfeeding and Young Child Nutrition Act 2023.
Under the amended law, formula milk will be given to newborns only on doctor’s orders.
According to the Sindh Health Department, representatives of the baby food industry had a meeting with the Sindh Health Minister a few days ago. During the meeting, the Health Minister refused to change the breastfeeding law approved by the provincial cabinet.
According to the authorities, under the proposed law, formula milk will be sold only in medical stores, under the proposed law, the milk of children up to 36 months will be considered as formula milk.
According to officials, Pakistan imports formula milk worth 400 million dollars every year.
It should be remembered that the breastfeeding law of Sindh was prepared under the guidelines of the World Health Organization and the World Health Assembly.
