The lower house of the Russian parliament has approved the country’s recruitment of criminals to fight in the Ukraine war.
According to the Russian news agency Tas News, the parliament has approved the Ministry of Defense to contract with criminals.
According to the law, the Ministry of Defense can contract with any person who is under investigation for any crime or whose case is pending in court or has been convicted.
Criminals convicted of sex crimes, treason, terrorism or extremism will not be recruited.
The punishment of criminals who fulfill the contract will be abolished.
Earlier, the Wagner group was allowed to recruit criminals from Russian prisons, but this process was stopped in February.
The Ministry of Defense of Russia itself wants to recruit directly. Moscow is suffering heavy losses in the war and is trying to recruit more military personnel.
