Candles on birthday cakes can cause illness, experts say

South Carolina: A birthday looks incomplete without a cake and if the cake is not lit with candles, the cake looks golden. But did you know that this process can lead to the transfer of thousands of bacteria?

Paul Dawson, a professor of food safety at Clemson University in the US, told CNN that a study by his team found that when candles are blown out, about 1,000 bacteria are released.

Professor Dawson said that if someone blew out the candles on the cake, I would throw away the top layer of my piece of cake. However, he said that not everyone needs to worry about getting sick from eating such cakes.

The professor said there is little risk in eating birthday cake, but the real problem arises for people who have very weak immune systems, are sick or are elderly.
