Lahore: Animal rights activist Anila Umeer, who is facing charges of allegedly administering sterilization injections to dogs at a health department sentry worker in Rawalpindi, has obtained pre-arrest bail from a local court.

On the other hand, NGOs working for the protection of animal rights from across the country have also come forward in their support.

Anilah Umeer and Sana Raja, an animal rights activist, are alleged to have quarreled with the sentry workers of the health department who were killing stray dogs by poisoning them in Pir Wadhai area of Rawalpindi and injected a sentry worker a few days ago. The sentry worker claims that he was allegedly given an injection used to sterilize dogs.

Special Assistant to the Prime Minister Salman Sufi has tweeted about it, in which he says that an FIR has been registered for misbehaving with government employees, which is a serious crime. The Deputy Commissioner Rawalpindi, along with the police, is examining the evidence and will take appropriate action accordingly.

On the other hand, Aniza Khan Omarzai, an animal rights activist from Lahore, says that the health department workers brutally poisoned 25 healthy neutered and vaccinated dogs, while the staff also poisoned a pregnant female dog. Due to this the female dog miscarried, on seeing this the common people lost control and beat these people and snatched their bags.

Aniza Khan said that the Health Department and the Ministry of Health have no authority to kill dogs. According to the law it is a crime to kill dogs, they cannot be poisoned or shot. Under the dog population control policy, only dogs can be sterilized and vaccinated against rabies. Catching the dogs is now the responsibility of the staff of the Metropolitan Corporation while their operation and vaccination are the responsibility of veterinary specialists of the Livestock.

Aneza Khan said that the health department has illegally killed the dogs by interfering, now killing is a crime and their action is contempt of court. It is sad that the sentry workers of the health department have filed an FIR against 50 unknown persons including Anila Umeer and Sana Raja.

It should be noted that it has happened for the first time that the issue of killing dogs by poisoning has become so serious.
