In light of the various warnings issued regarding heat wave, it is very important for people to know how they can protect themselves from it.
Federal Minister for Climate Change and Environment Coordination Senator Sherry Rehman earlier this month advised provincial and local bodies to take necessary precautions to protect public health and the impact of severe weather on vulnerable communities during the heat wave. Minimize the
The South Asian Climate Outlook Forum (SASCOF) has also predicted that minimum and maximum temperatures are expected to be ‘above normal’ in South Asia, including Pakistan, except parts of the Himalayan foothills.
Precautionary measures to prevent heat wave
1- Keep yourself hydrated even if you don’t feel thirsty, drink adequate amount of water and use fresh juices.
2- Wear loose, lightweight and light-colored clothing to protect yourself from the harmful rays of the sun and keep yourself cool.
3- When the temperature is high during the day, avoid going out of the house between 9 am and 4 pm.
4- Limit outdoor activities to early morning and then later in the evening when the sun goes down.
5- If outdoor work is unavoidable during the hot part of the day, try to rest between tasks to calm yourself down.
6- Use an umbrella, hat and sunglasses while going in the sunlight.
7. Apply sunscreen to protect the skin from sun damage because if the skin is damaged, it reduces the body’s ability to maintain temperature.
8- Gradually acclimate your body to the heat.
1- Do not leave anyone in closed places like parked cars on hot days.
2- Do not drink caffeinated drinks as they increase dehydration in the body.
3- Do not exercise outside during sunny hours.
It should be remembered that in 2015, heatwaves killed more than 1 thousand people in Sindh province alone.
