Rome: A boat carrying migrants has gone missing off Italy’s southernmost island, with two ships searching for it unsuccessfully.

According to the World News Agency, the boat carrying the refugees entered the high seas in the Mediterranean 320 kilometers (200 miles) north of the Libyan port of Benghazi and 400 kilometers from Malta and Italy’s southern island of Sicily. .

It is said that the boat was without an engine and could not withstand the sea waves and wind gusts in the area.

The rescue agencies had contacted the people in the boat when they were stuck in the middle of the sea, but soon this contact was lost, on which the volunteer ships conducted a search operation under humanitarian sympathy.

The search operation failed to find any trace of the migrant boat after which a helicopter was called in to assist. So far, there is no evidence of the ship being wrecked or sunk.

Search operation is in progress.
