Iran’s President Ebrahim Raisi has appointed IRGC Commander Ali Akbar Ahmadian as the Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council.
The Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council is the highest-level post in Iran, playing an important role in the country’s domestic and regional policymaking.
Before Ahmadiyan, Ali Shamkhani, who had held the post for the past 10 years, was a former admiral of the Iranian Navy.
Who is Ali Akbar Ahmadiyan?
According to Iran’s news agency Tasnim News, Ahmadian is the head of Revolutionary Guards Strategic Center.
He is also a member of the Reconciliation Council, from 1976 to 1979 he was the Commander of the Revolutionary Guards Navy.
From 1979 to 1986, Ahmadian headed the Joint Staff of the Revolutionary Guards.
In July 2000, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei appointed Ahmadian as the Chief of Staff of the Revolutionary Guards.
He is credited with modernizing the force and making its operations more efficient.
On March 24, 2007, the United Nations Security Council froze his overseas assets, citing his ties to Iran’s Revolutionary Guards.
