After Karachi, a large number of XDR typhoid cases were also reported in Islamabad.
According to Head of Infectious Diseases PIMS Professor Naseem Akhtar, 60% of typhoid patients coming to PIMS Hospital are of XDR Typhoid who are coming to PIMS Islamabad from Punjab, KP and Kashmir.
He says that the people suffering from XDR typhoid include both adults and children and the cost of antibiotic medicine alone for such a patient is more than one and a half lakh rupees.
Prof. Naseem Akhtar has said that third generation antibiotic drugs do not work on people suffering from XDR typhoid.
He said that XDR typhoid is spread through dirty water and contaminated food, besides the unnecessary and excessive use of antibiotics is also the main reason.
