US espionage database misuse exposed

Washington: The US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has been exposed to regular misuse of intelligence databases.

Al Jazeera reports that a redacted document from an oversight court revealed the FBI’s illegal activity while investigating suspects who entered Capitol Hill on January 6, 2021.

The court document revealed that the FBI used a special intelligence database containing foreign intelligence thousands of times when investigating American citizens. It was further informed that the preparation of this database started after the September 11, 2001 attacks, which critics were deeply concerned about.

The database is maintained under Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, which expires at the end of the year. Between 2020 and early 2021, 300,000 abuses were recorded, the document said.
