The US Department of Justice says it has disabled a dangerous computer virus developed by the Russian intelligence agency FSB.
Russia’s intelligence agency had been spying on 50 countries, including a NATO member state, through the virus for two decades.
The FSB planted the ‘Snake’ or ‘EuroBros’ virus in computers around the world, targeting government networks, research institutions and journalists.
In a multi-year operation, the US agency FBI defeated the Snake virus with its own computer code, commanding the virus to rewrite its own code, rendering it inoperable.
The virus was developed by the Russian agency FSB in 2003.
