Confirmation of poliovirus in environmental samples from 2 cities, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

Polio virus has been confirmed in the environmental samples of two cities of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

According to the National Institute of Health, wild polio virus 1 was confirmed in the sewage water of Peshawar and Hangu.

Sewage samples from Peshawar and Hangu were taken in April 2023.

Federal officials say that the polio virus found in Peshawar and Hangu is similar to the virus found in Nangarhar, Afghanistan.

Officials said that only one case of polio has been reported in Pakistan so far, the finding of polio virus in sewage water at the beginning of summer is alarming.

Experts say that much improvement is needed in anti-polio efforts in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
