The game of cricket is becoming increasingly popular in America as well. International T20 League is being held in America in July this year in which stars from all over the world will participate. Next year USA and West Indies will jointly host T20 World Cup 2024.
In such a situation, cricket activities are taking place on a regular basis in the American Consulate in Karachi as well.
Despite Ramadan in Karachi, a cricket festival was organized at the US Consulate in which American employees of the consulate, apart from cricketers, journalists and coaches, took part. Surprisingly, Americans were taking keen interest in the game.
On Tuesday evening, the closing ceremony of the camp organized to train students in cricket in collaboration with Lincoln Corner Karachi and Lincoln Corner Pakistan American Cultural Center was celebrated at the Consulate.
The two-week training camp concluded with the final match between the two Lincoln Corners teams at the Consulate.
In this camp, focusing on the importance of healthy living, youths playing cricket in the streets were trained on the rules and regulations of professional sports, while young women enjoyed the tradition of Ramadan cricket by participating in sports with male players. A unique opportunity to enjoy was provided.
Acting Consul General Liam O’Flanigan and Acting Deputy Consul General Elizabeth Sunday watched the cricket match along with former Test cricketer Sikandar Bakht and Pakistan Women’s Cricket Team player Ayman Anwar.
Addressing the participants on this occasion, Liam O’Flanigan said, “Ramadan cricket matches are a very interesting tradition, I am enjoying these matches today. We wanted these cricket matches to be held till dawn but It could not happen, it may happen next year.”
Lincoln Corners is a partnership between the US Embassy and other Pakistani institutions. Lincoln Corners established in various universities, public libraries and cultural centers are basically multimedia resource centers, where visitors can not only get familiar with the English language, but also get information about America using various resources.
This is the second Ramadan Cricket Camp, sponsored by Lincoln Corner Karachi and Lincoln Corner PACC at Liaquat Memorial Library.
Before the Iftar dinner, renowned cricket commentator and former Test cricketer Sikandar Bakht and cricketer Ayman Anwar played cricket with both the teams and gave tips to the players.
Later, he had Iftar dinner with Acting Deputy Consul General Elizabeth Sunday, Public Diplomacy Officer Lee McManus and other officials of the US Consulate.
