GC University Lahore Vice Chancellor Dr. Syed Asghar Zaidi has written a letter to Speaker National Assembly, Chairman Senate against the proposed amendments in the HEC Ordinance stating that the higher education sector in Pakistan is already facing various challenges. It is faced that if these amendments are approved, it may have negative effects on higher education.

The letter said that under the proposed amendments, the HEC can direct government officials, district administration and police to help, which is a worrisome development.

The letter said that we will give reservations on any such move that harms the autonomy of the universities.

The Vice-Chancellor further said that these amendments will undermine the facilitator role of HEC and reduce the role of HEC to a policing body. Consultation should take into account the views and concerns of all stakeholders, including universities, teachers, students, and parents. The proposals in Section 10 of the existing Ordinance are particularly troubling.

The Vice-Chancellor said that these amendments encroach on the domains of the provinces and are an attempt to subordinate the provincial higher education institutions to the HEC. is suggested. It will also be a violation of provincial autonomy.

Prof. Asghar Zaidi said that the Vice-Chancellor urged the honorable members of the National Assembly and the Senate of Pakistan to review any proposed amendments in the HEC Ordinance, such amendments would harm the universities.

The Vice Chancellor has emphasized that the future of the country’s higher education sector depends on the ability to ensure that all stakeholders are consulted and listened to.
