Baden-Württemberg: A Syrian youth who escaped from war-torn Syria and sought refuge in Germany has been elected as the mayor of a German town.
According to international media, Ryan Al-Shebel, who fled the war in Syria, is the first Syrian refugee who won the election to become the mayor of the German state of Baden-Württemberg.
After winning the Mayershab election, the first thing Ryan Al-Shaybel did was to call his mother in Syria and inform her of his success. Ryan escaped from Syria 8 years ago and arrived in Europe in a rubber boat.
Ryan ran as an independent candidate in the municipality of Ostelsheim. He defeated two German candidates, Marco Strauss and Matthias Fey, with 55.41 percent of the vote.
