UN Chief Antonio Guterres to Arrive in Pakistan Tomorrow

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will arrive in Pakistan tomorrow morning on an important visit, during which he is scheduled to meet senior Pakistani officials in Islamabad.

Guterres last visited Pakistan in 2022, when he toured areas devastated by catastrophic floods.

During his upcoming visit, the UN secretary-general will meet Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Muhammad Ishaq Dar, and President Asif Ali Zardari.

Guterres will also visit the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), where he will observe Pakistan’s disaster preparedness and response capabilities following the devastating floods of 2022.

He is also scheduled to visit the headquarters of the United Nations Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP) in Islamabad. UNMOGIP is the UN mission comprising military observers deployed in India and Pakistan.

US-Iran Talks Also on Agenda

During his visit, the UN secretary-general is expected to discuss Pakistan’s diplomatic and mediation efforts between the United States and Iran.

The talks are also expected to cover Pakistan’s constructive role in supporting negotiations between the two countries.

Guterres is expected to return to New York on Thursday.

Who is Antonio Guterres?

Antonio Guterres was born in 1949 in Lisbon, the capital of Portugal. He earned an engineering degree from Instituto Superior Técnico.

He speaks Portuguese, English, French and Spanish fluently. Guterres is married to Catarina de Almeida Vaz Pinto and has two children, one stepson and three grandchildren.

Guterres is currently the ninth Secretary-General of the United Nations. He assumed office on January 1, 2017.

Before becoming UN secretary-general, Guterres served as the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees from June 2005 to December 2015.

Prior to becoming UNHCR chief, he spent more than two decades in government and public service.

He served as Prime Minister of Portugal from 1995 to 2002 and played a prominent role in international efforts to resolve the crisis in East Timor during his tenure.

Guterres was elected to the Portuguese Parliament in 1976 and served as a member for 17 years.

From 1981 to 1983, he was a member of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, where he chaired the Committee on Population, Migration and Refugees.

Guterres was also associated with the Socialist International for many years. He served as its vice president from 1992 to 1999 and as its president from 1999 until mid-2005.

He also played a role in founding the Portuguese Refugee Council and the Portuguese Consumers’ Association DECO.

In the early 1970s, he served as president of an organization working on social development projects in poor areas of Lisbon.
