The deaths of dozens of children in Gambia have been linked to allegedly poisoned cough syrup manufactured in India.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the United States and the Gambian health authorities have conducted a joint investigation.
In October, the World Health Organization issued an alert that 4 cough syrups produced by an Indian pharmaceutical company had caused the death of several children in Gambia.
The report released yesterday by the American agency CDC said that the investigation revealed that the syrup contained diethylene glycol and ethylene glycol, which affected the children’s kidneys badly.
Patients exposed to these chemicals show a range of symptoms, including mental health problems, headaches, intestinal distress and, most importantly, kidney damage.
According to the CDC, they were contacted by the Gambian Ministry of Health to assist in the investigation into the deaths of the children from the syrup.
The report said that manufacturers added diethylene and ethylene glycol to the syrup instead of expensive ingredients.
