The rare turtles were hidden in special double packing and brought to Pakistan
Lahore: Wildlife department of Punjab has recovered 200 rare turtles illegally imported from Thailand.
Acting on a tip-off, the Wildlife Department of Punjab recovered 200 rare tortoises illegally brought to Pakistan from Thailand.
The rare turtles were brought to Pakistan by hiding them in double packing, after receiving the information, the wildlife team stopped them at the Gargo area of Lahore Airport at 8:30 pm. The flight from Thailand landed at Lahore Airport at 10:30 pm, where the wildlife officials reported the illegal importation of rare turtles to the customs officials when the said cargo arrived in the cargo area.
When the cartons were checked at the airport, 200 turtles were found out of it, which were hidden separately by packing 100 of 100. Syed Aizaz Ahmed, the importer, was also summoned by the authorities at Lahore Airport.
According to the authorities, it is illegal to import turtles as per the Wildlife Act, which is included in Schedule III of the Wildlife Act. The customs authorities have started action on the illegal import of rare turtles and the wildlife department has also written a letter to the customs authorities to hand over the turtles.
