Does Eating Certain Fruits Before Bed Really Improve Sleep?

Doncaster, England: According to Sleep Charity, a sleep health training and support organization, eating a banana for dinner can be the key to good sleep.

The sleep charity has released five tips on how to get better quality sleep in 2024, with fruit shortly before bed at the top.

The institute says that the high levels of magnesium and potassium in bananas, in particular, help relax muscles, leading to better sleep.

Bananas also contain the amino acid tryptophan, which stimulates the production of hormones that calm the mind. Certain fruits also stimulate the production of melatonin, a hormone that occurs naturally in the human body and plays a major role in sleep.

Research published in a special issue of Antioxidants in Health Sciences and Diseases identified grapes, tart cherries and strawberries as the best sources of melatonin.
