Lahore: Experts say that if the mouths of lions in zoos are exposed to human flesh and blood, they become more dangerous and can attack their keeper. Lions and tigers can attack anyone when they are hungry.
After the death of a citizen in the cage of tigers in Bahawalpur Zoo, instructions have been issued to the keepers who fed them to be careful in the future. Wildlife experts say that when lions and tigers get a taste of human flesh, fears increase that they will attack any human, including their keeper.
Earlier in 2020, a young man was mauled by lions in Lahore Safari Park who allegedly entered the safari jungle to cut grass, while in November 1999, an Asiatic black bear mauled a young man in Lahore Zoo. An 18-month-old child was stabbed to death inside the cage.
Dr. Rizwan Khan, Senior Veterinary Officer, Punjab Wildlife, told Express News that it is the instinct of all carnivorous animals, including lions and tigers, to attack any living creature when they are hungry. Most of the lions and tigers kept in zoos are born here and have only tasted the meat that is fed to them, but when they eat human flesh, they definitely get a new taste. And then there is the danger that they may attack any human including their keeper. But lions and tigers mostly attack when they are hungry.
Deputy Director Punjab Wildlife Multan Sheikh Muhammad Zahid also agrees that big cats will attack only when they are extremely hungry. He said that when a tiger eats full of meat, it sleeps for 17 to 18 hours in twenty-four hours and stays awake for 6 hours, but if it is hungry, then even if you feed it with your own hands, it will attack you. will attack. No such incident has been reported in Pakistan yet, but there have been numerous incidents in different countries of the world when lions and tigers attacked and devoured their keeper and owner.
Sheikh Muhammad Zahid said that people who keep lions in their homes and then make videos of them and share them on social media, this kind of action with lions and tigers can be dangerous for them at any time because of these animals. Instinct can change at any time.
Dr. Rizwan Khan says that zoos all over the world follow the two-keeper theory of keeping big cats, meaning two senior keepers are deployed at the same time so that if for some reason one keeper In case of physical or psychological problems, another keeper can act in his place.
Experts say that carnivorous animals, including tigers, should always be fed in a cage and at a distance from them. A slight mistake and carelessness can kill the keeper.
