Maryland: A study found that a 12% reduction in daily calorie intake can increase our life span.
Experts say that low calorie consumption reduces inflammation in the body that is associated with aging.
Scientists at the National Institutes of Health examined the effects of reducing calories by 12 percent on people in a two-year study.
The study found that genes involved in energy production and metabolism became more active in people who reduced their caloric intake, while inflammation was suppressed.
According to study author Dr. Luigi Ferrucci, because inflammation is so closely related to the aging process, limiting calorie intake is a very effective way to prevent an inflammatory condition.
He said that a small reduction in calorie consumption can be easily done which can have a big impact on our health.
In the study, experts observed that despite the participants’ weight loss of up to 9 kg in the first year, their muscle strength did not decrease.
In a study published in the journal Aging Cell, scientists biopsied the thigh muscles of 90 participants before and after starting a two-year diet.
Scientists found that people who reduced their caloric intake had activated genes, which led to an increased aging process.
