Away from the shadows of ‘Mother’, you are alive but very restless, your memories and love are the priceless capital of our life, your advice is a torch for life and your prayers are a shade in the sun of sorrows. The merciless sleep of death has separated you from us, but your kindness and love will live on forever in our hearts. This is the mention of my mother and Begum Razi Hameed Kamali, who was engaged throughout her life for the promotion of education and social consciousness in Pakistan.
Begum RH Kamali was a renowned educationist, scholar, researcher of the country. You were a conscientious, dutiful and painstaking social being. Begum Kamali rendered invaluable services for the promotion and development of education in the country. You were a very good-mannered, good-natured, enthusiastic, all-round personality, a movement woman. She not only kept a close eye on the educational problems of Pakistan but also always offered practical suggestions for their solution.
She received her primary education from Gosha Mahal School, Hyderabad Deccan, completed her secondary education from there, while from Inter Women’s College, Karachi. While at Inter, she became an ardent activist and representative of the largest and most active student body, the Democratic Students Federation (DSF). He worked a lot for the awareness of female students. Later DSF was renamed as National Students Federation (NSF) which had a profound impact on the country’s politics in the sixties. After some time the Girls Students Congress was founded under the NSF, with Razi as its General Secretary. Congress fought big for the welfare of the students and to solve the problems.
It was the largest organization of female students, its first session was held in Khaliq Dina Hall under the chairmanship of Ms. Atiya Faizi, which was widely discussed in newspapers. Congress established Landing Libraries on a large scale, which greatly benefited poor students. Devoted with the spirit of philanthropic service, Razi and his associates took the initiative to establish Razaviya School and immediately a coaching center for classes 9 and 10 was established there and regular evening classes were started. The number of students increased and it became a high quality school.
Initially a few paid teachers were hired for the primary school in the morning, followed by the secondary school in the afternoon, where teaching was on a voluntary basis. Begum Razi Kamali started teaching from 1955 during her student days.
After graduating from her school, she used to perform the duties of the headmistress here. In 1960, this school stood on its feet in an excellent manner. Along with the job, she completed her higher education and joined Sifiya Girls Secondary School. When schools were nationalized in 1972, Rizvia School was nationalized as a reputable secondary school.
You and several of your colleagues formed the teachers’ organization ‘Karachi Teachers’ Union’ in the mid-1960s, whose membership spanned from primary to university teachers. You and your colleagues prepared a report titled “A Bird’s Eye View of Private Schools in Karachi” and sent it to Arbab Aqtar in 1971-71. This report played a significant role in the nationalization of education which took place later in 1972.
On January 12, 1964, she got married to Professor Abdul Hameed Kamali, the eldest son of the well-known educationist and mathematician of the sub-continent, Professor Allah Bakhsh Kamali, and the world-renowned philosopher. By that time Ms. Razi Safiya became the Vice Principal in Girls Secondary School. In 1975, she was promoted as the President of Madras Meridian Government Girls Secondary School and for the reorganization of this institution, she organized welfare programs and Meena Bazaar etc.
This school is still a testimony of your efforts. In 1995, you retired from this school as the president of Madras. During this period, there were several offers to work in organized education, but he chose to stay at Meridian School. Despite being the head teacher, she used to take classes and support poor children. So you did a lot to set the school on the path of development. This is the reason that due to your excellent services, the Department of Education also extended your tenure by one year from May 1994.
He also participated in many national and international academic or academic conferences and presented very scholarly articles on the subject of ‘Education’ and also made suggestions, including the National Conference on Education, Islamabad between 1980 and 1981. International Hijra Scholars Conference etc. are also included. In December 1994, he also presented very useful suggestions on the subject of educational reforms in the National Education Conference of Karachi.
You undermined many strands of social welfare. You were also a member and head of several committees, curricular and non-curricular committees etc. of the Karachi Region Education Department and Education Boards. You were the best organizer. They never compromise on principles. What did At the time of election you are appointed presiding officer and do not allow any kind of rigging. At the time of examinations, you held the posts of Centresupretendent/centre inspector and did not allow any kind of copying. You bravely faced all kinds of situations.
In 1972, she was the chairperson of the Action Committee of the Nationalized Schools Teachers of Karachi, an active organization formed to deal with the nationalization of educational institutions. In 1975, she joined the Association of Sadar Madraseen. You conducted the prelims exams of Nahum and Vidham by Anjuman Sadar Madraseen. After becoming the President of Madrasah, you also continued to hold the positions of President/Secretary/Treasurer of the Nationalized Heads Association.
After retiring from the service, the retired president became associated with Madrasain Association and this journey of spreading scholarly friendship ended with her departure. You hold the positions of Head Examiner, Head Checker, Moderator almost every year. You were also on the panel of judges for practical books on science and chemistry of Nahum and Dham compiled under the Sindh Teachers Foundation. You were considered to be the bearer of the rights of teachers and students.
“A formidable, hard-working member of the student rights movement, Razi was one of those hard-to-find people who was not at all self-centered, worked tirelessly,” says education expert Prof. Anitaghalam Ali. She performed her professional responsibilities like a patriotic citizen and also fulfilled her duties like a dutiful mother.” Former Chairman Under Board Prof. Anwar Ahmed Zai writes, “Begum Razi Kamali promoted education in the country. And have rendered invaluable services for development.
She had a keen eye on the educational problems of Pakistan. He not only understood the educational problems but also always offered practical suggestions for their solution. Begum Razi Kamali started her journey from the student union. As the first general secretary of the Girls Students Congress, she played a very important role in solving the educational problems of female students and awakening their political, social and organizational consciousness.
As a teacher, the scope of his services was very wide and along with educational services, the series of social services also continued. Razi Kamali Sahiba has also rendered valuable services for solving the problems of teachers through the platform of Karachi Teachers’ Union. Begum Razi Kamali was a very decent, polite, honest, hardworking, soft-spoken, patient and witty lady. She was a very principled and committed woman.”
Professor Daqeela Islam writes, “Razi was not only an excellent teacher and then an extremely organized principal, but also an active president of the teachers’ association and her services in preparing the curriculum can never be forgotten.” Fiction writer Noorah Hasan Siddiqui writes that Girls Students Congress was the first organization of female students in Pakistan which worked to raise the awareness of the problems among female students. Till then she was known as Razi Ghafoor in the educational and social circles of Karachi.
Razi was considered deserving of this prestigious position due to her serious nature, selfless commitment to the cause of female students, gentleness and understanding of the matter. As the first General Secretary of the Girls Students Congress, Razi played a vital role in making the organization active and influential and expanding its reach to more and more educational institutions in Karachi. The Girls’ Students’ Congress worked in collaboration with the National Students’ Federation, which was the largest, most dynamic and active student organization of its time.
In 1956, when Great Britain and France attacked Egypt by advancing Israel against Egypt’s taking the Suez Canal as national ownership, Pakistan, like other countries in the world, protested strongly, especially the people of Karachi. The main force of the protest movement in Karachi was the students of Karachi. The students of Karachi, led by the NSF, staged a massive demonstration in front of the Prime Minister’s House and while the demonstration was going on, another huge procession came and joined it. It was a procession of students taken out by the Girls Students Congress, which was led by Razi. Razi Kamali spent his entire life working for the education sector. In 1972, all schools were nationalized, resulting in many new problems for teachers. Razi Kamali, along with some colleagues, formed the Karachi Teachers’ Union, which included teachers from schools to universities. This union has rendered valuable services in solving the problems of teachers. Razi was an example of indomitable commitment as well as civility and decency.
Razi Kamali was not only a great teacher but also a righteous, friendly and fair principal. He was a very dear person who was active in his work with great hard work, passion and dedication. With their skills and abilities, they enhance the skills of teachers and equip students with the jewel of education. Along with education, we work with great dedication, dedication and enthusiasm to maintain high standards in addition to co-curricular activities and hobbies. Razi did not limit her activities to the Girls’ Congress, but wherever there was any work being done for the benefit of the backward sections of the city, this servant of ours would volunteer beyond her energies in this work. Our Razi was never afraid, nor was any displeasure seen on her face.
When they are convinced of something or when they believe that this work is right and needs time, then they do not feel any bitterness about something. Razi’s passion for human love and service to others, which was given to him by God, was driven in every field of life. He never ran after wealth or fame, nor did he seek any reward or acknowledgment of his efforts from anyone. A selfless loving personality who spent his entire life sharing happiness with people.”
Ms. Hasina Moin Sahiba writes, ‘I have seen Razi always laughing and making memorable speeches. Razi Kamali and her fellow girls were very farsighted, they were reading the story of the coming years with open eyes.
He knew that if the foundation is not strengthened today, cracks will start appearing in the building of the nation and the country. This was a color of Razi Kamali, a very positive and very solid color, when a person spares a few moments of his life and thinks to do something for the country and the nation, it is great. If only there were many people like them, today we would also be among the developed nations.
Begum Razi’s activities took many forms, but the goal was one, for the achievement of which she continued to struggle till her last breath, the goal of the honor of humanity and the salvation of mankind. He motivated himself to complete his mission till his last breath. Reciting the Holy Quran for many hours with the observance of prayer and daily regularity.
She herself served in one form or the other all her life, but she was so independent that she did not mind taking her service from anyone. And finally, on Saturday, February 17, 2007, she died in Karachi after a short illness. They have thought of eternal sleep but have left behind them deeds that will continue to be alms for them in the afterlife and have left behind a series of memories that can be used to compile the history of an era.
