Islamabad: The issue of heavy electricity bills to the public and free units to departmental officers reached the Supreme Court.
A petition has been filed in the Supreme Court on behalf of citizen Saeeda Begum, requesting the court to immediately stop the supply of free electricity units to officers of all departments.
In the petition filed by the citizen Saeeda Begum against free electricity for certain sections and heavy bills for the public, it has been decided that the facility of free electricity and petrol to all institutions, including the judiciary and parliamentarians, should be declared null and void. Tax levied on bills should be declared null and recovered from IPPs.
The petition added that the previous government exempted the IPP boards from tax on electricity while those working in the electricity department also draw salaries. Electricity slabs should be restored for the convenience of the public. The Constitution ensures provision of equal facilities to all citizens. The petitioner incurred an electricity bill of more than 54 thousand and is unable to pay the electricity bill despite all resources.
