Paris: Abayas have been banned in schools in France.

According to foreign media, France’s education minister announced a ban on wearing abayas, loose-fitting dresses and full-sleeved dresses in public schools.

French Education Minister Gabriel Atal said in an interview with a local channel that the purpose of banning the abaya is that when students go to the classroom, their religion should not be identified by looking at their clothing.

In France, a 2004 law banned all signs or clothing in schools that appeared to express religious affiliation, but did not include the abaya. Different political parties of France have condemned the ban as illegal.
