This medicine should never be used before surgery, experts warn

Illinois: The American Society of Anesthesiologists (anesthesiologists) recently warned that Ozempic, a drug used for weight loss, could be dangerous for patients undergoing surgery.

Ozampic and other drugs in a class called GLP-1 receptor agonists slow down digestion, leading to decreased appetite and weight loss.

Dr. Michael Champio, president of the American Society of Anesthesiologists, said food left in the stomach during anesthesia increases the risk of vomiting. He said that we have reported such cases that when the patient took such medicine before the operation, he vomited even though there should not have been any food in his stomach at that time.

“As soon as we got such reports, we immediately started working on how the drug works and what is its mechanism,” added the doctor.

Finally, the agency cautioned the public that if you take such a drug once a day, stop taking your daily dose before surgery on the morning of surgery.
