In view of the terms of Pakistan’s agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), preparations are being made for further increase in electricity rates.
According to the sources of the Ministry of Finance, as a result of this agreement, electricity and gas will become more expensive, while there is a possibility of an increase in the petroleum levy, the rates of electricity and gas will have to be increased before the meeting of the IMF Executive Board.
According to sources in the Ministry of Finance, there is a possibility of a further increase in the basic tariff of electricity up to Rs 4 per unit.
Sources of the Ministry of Finance say that the approval of the increase in the price of electricity will be taken from the Federal Cabinet.
On the other hand, the decision regarding increasing the cost of gas is also expected soon, Ogra has sent the summary of increase in gas tariff up to 50% to the government.
According to sources, the government has scope to increase the levy on petrol, diesel by up to Rs 10 per litre.
