Petitions against trial in military courts, June 27 order of proceedings issued

A written order was issued for a June 27 hearing on constitutional petitions against the trial of civilians in military courts.

In the order, the Supreme Court said that the Attorney General had given a list of 102 persons in the custody of the military authorities.

The order stated that the Attorney General said that the arrestees were being investigated, and that there were no charges against any of the arrested persons that warranted the death penalty or long imprisonment.

According to the Supreme Court, the Attorney General referred to the rules of the Army Act, 1954, according to which the prosecution evidence is given to the arrested persons on completion of the investigation.

It added that the Attorney General said that time is also provided for prosecution evidence and counsel. The Attorney General also said that the stage has not come to give the arrested persons time for materials and lawyers.

The order said that the Attorney General said that no military trial of any civilian has started yet, if there is any progress in this regard, the Attorney General will inform the Chief Justice in the chamber.

According to the Supreme Court, the Attorney General said that arrangements will be made for telephone contact and meeting with the families of the arrested persons.

According to the Supreme Court, the Attorney General said that the government will provide full support for the recovery of journalist Imran Riaz.

The order said that the Attorney General will take instructions and inform the court about making the list of arrested persons public.

The order also said that further hearing of constitutional petitions will be held after the Eid-ul-Azha holidays.
