Karachi: Organized by the Sindh Health Department, a five-day anti-polio campaign will begin from Monday, in which more than 18 lakh children of the province will be given polio drops.
The special polio campaign on behalf of the Sindh Health Department will continue from June 19 to 23, which will be conducted in 9 districts of the province, including Hyderabad, Jamshoro, Karachi, Central District, East, Kemari, Korangi, Malir, South and West District, Sindh. Polio workers in 120 USCs will go door to door to administer drops to more than 18 lakh children, more than 10 thousand workers will participate in the polio campaign while more than 2200 police personnel will also be present.
According to the Sindh Health Department, a positive environmental sample has been obtained from Gujru, this sample was collected from sewage on 15 May 2023, the first such positive sample was found after 8 months, the last positive sample was from Landhi. Collected in August 2022, this is extremely worrying as it means that the polio virus is present in the area and children under five are at risk.
The Department of Health says that all parents and children’s caregivers are requested to give their children polio vaccine during the campaign. Polio is incurable and can only be prevented through anti-polio campaigns.
