Mayor Karachi Election Procedure Challenge, Hearing in Sindh High Court

In the Sindh High Court, a hearing was held on Jamaat-e-Islami’s petition against the law to change the election procedure of Mayor Karachi.

Murtaza Wahab’s lawyer argued that only one article of the constitution should be mentioned, which has been violated.

Jamaat-e-Islami’s lawyer said that after the election, the provision of inclusion of non-elected persons was added.

Hafiz Naeemur Rehman has filed an application to stop the mayorship of Murtaza Wahab.

The PPP lawyer said that there are many parties in the case, all of them will be affected by the decision, so everyone should be heard.

On which the court gave remarks and said that we want to hear everyone and will decide after listening to all the parties.

The lawyer of Jamaat-e-Islami argued that the basic component of the Local Government Act was that the local government would be run by elected persons.

The lawyer added that such a person will now run the financial and administrative affairs of the city, who has to be elected after 6 months.

It also argued that such a person who was not involved in any stage of the election would be directly elected as the Mayor, Chairman. Such legislation is against the spirit of local government.

The lawyer said that it should be a part of the entire electoral process to be elected mayor, passing such legislation a few days ago is against the spirit of the constitution and law.

On this, Advocate General (AG) Sindh said that the application can be heard but it will not be appropriate to stay it.

On this, Justice Yusuf Saeed inquired from the Advocate General (AG) Sindh that if the application is approved, what will happen?

On which the Advocate General said that then the process of selecting the mayor will be a resource. The court said that they will hear more arguments tomorrow, come prepared tomorrow.

The court rejected AG Sindh’s request to adjourn the hearing for a week and said that further hearing on the matter will be held on June 14.
