Colombia: A recent new study shows that memory and thinking skills that are affected with age can be improved with nutrients called flavanols. These flavanols are found in chocolate and berries.
Dr. Scott Small, professor of neurology and director of the Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, said, “We found with the help of biomarkers of flavanols that if the body has a relative deficiency of flavanols, it’s a sign that you age.” It will lead to memory loss.
The doctor added that it is possible that just as children need specific nutrients for their developing brains, the aging brain also needs specific nutrients for optimal health and memory. Juicy flavanols are found in abundance in chocolates and berries.
Scientists are now looking at a series of nutrients that the aging body and brain need, he said.
The aforementioned research was funded by the US National Institutes of Health and Mars Age.
