Wellington: New Zealand Prime Minister Chris Hopkins has said he wants to see his country become independent from Britain.
According to international media reports, the Prime Minister of New Zealand and the leader of the ruling Labor Party, Chris Hopkins, has left Auckland to attend the coronation ceremony of King Charles III in London.
Talking to reporters before his departure, he said that he will meet British Prime Minister Rishi Sonak to speed up the February 2022 Free Trade Agreement between the two countries (New Zealand and the United Kingdom).
The Prime Minister further said that with time New Zealand will emerge as a fully independent country and stand on its own feet like other developed countries in the world.
However, on the other hand, he said that this desire was not a priority or something that he would emphasize as his manifesto because perhaps now is not the right time.
He also said that I do not think that replacing New Zealand’s Governor-General system with an alternative republican system is an immediate policy priority, but that the move to a republic should be debated in public circles.
