Heat wave in Punjab due to climate change, possibility of increase in heat intensity

Lahore: The Provincial Disaster Management Authority of Punjab has warned that due to climate change, the intensity of heat waves and heat may increase, while the intense heat has also expressed the fear of forest fires.

According to the details, an important meeting was held in the committee room on heat wave and forest fire under the chairmanship of Director General PDMA, in which Director South Hameedullah Malik, Civil Defence, Forests, Agriculture, Education, Local Government Industries, chaired by Director General PDMA. Officers of CDA Bahawalpur participated while Additional Deputy Commissioners Rahim Yar Khan and Bhakkar along with other districts participated in the meeting through video link.

Director PDMA Tariq Mehmood Bukhari said that all the concerned institutions should submit the plan to PDMA about the prevention and management of the harmful effects of heat wave. The education department should immediately inform the PDMA about the examination schedule of the children. Due to climate change, heatwaves and heat intensity may increase, while the increase in heat intensity may lead to forest fires. The Forestry Department should form special teams to prevent forest fire and submit a report.

Tariq Mahmood Bukhari also said that special instructions have been issued to the health department and other related institutions to prevent heat wave, senior citizens and children can be more affected by heat wave. Citizens have to follow precautionary measures for protection.

Director PDMA said that effective awareness should be provided to the public about the harmful effects of heat waves and preventive measures. PDMA is always ready to deal with any emergency.
