Astronomers are exploring new things by exploring space. Recently, laughing gas has been discovered in the atmosphere of distant planets. The presence of this gas can be a sign of life. Nitrous oxide is a greenhouse gas, which is emitted by plants. The presence of this gas in the atmosphere is considered as a biosignature i.e. an indication of life. Biosignatures include all the gases that are found in large quantities in the Earth’s atmosphere today.
Oxygen from photosynthesis or methane from organic matter are known to be the most promising biosignatures in exoplanets. But University of California Riverside Astrobiologists say the scientific community has largely ignored nitrous oxide as a sign of life.
According to Dr. Eddie Schweiterman, an astrobiologist in the university’s Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences, few researchers have thought to investigate nitrous oxide. The team led by Dr. Schweiterman came to their conclusion after estimating how much nitrous oxide could be produced by organisms on Earth-like planets. Nitrous oxide is a relaxing and pain-relieving gas commonly found in dentists’ clinics.
