Request for women's march on Lahore Mall Road rejected due to security concerns

Lahore: The organizing committee of Aurat March has organized a march near Nasir Bagh Lahore on March 8.

The organizers say that the women’s march is their constitutional right and they will not back down from it.

On the other hand, the Deputy Commissioner Lahore has refused to allow the Awrat March administration to march on Nasir Bagh, Iwan Iqbal, Al Hamra and Mall Road due to the protest of Jamaat-e-Islami Hayamarch and other organizations.

Civil society, various NGOs representing women and transgender community had applied for permission to organize Aurat March in Lahore on the occasion of International Women’s Day, which was rejected by the Deputy Commissioner Lahore.

Deputy Commissioner (DC) Rafia Haider rejected the request of the Aurat March administration due to security concerns, controversial placards and slogans during the march and clashes with the participants of the Haya March on Mall Road by Jamaat-e-Islami women on the same day. Is.

DC Lahore Rafa Haider said that according to the reports of the security agencies, there are enough threat alerts regarding the women’s march, so the request has been rejected.

Sources said that due to the controversial slogans raised during the Aurat March and the display of controversial banners and placards during the march, serious concerns have been expressed by various religious parties including ordinary citizens.

According to the sources, a religious party has also made a program to stop the women’s march at any cost, which may worsen the peace and order situation in the city.

It should be noted that last year also the workers of a religious party had protested on the occasion of organizing the Awrat March, but due to strict security arrangements, no untoward incident had taken place.

On the other hand, the organizing committee of Awart March has decided to march on March 8 anyway. In this regard, the organizers will also announce their plan of action in an important press conference on March 6.

The Organizing Committee of Awart March says that holding Awart March is their constitutional right and no NOC is required for it. March 8 will march and will not allow anyone to take away their constitutional right. According to the organizers, they will challenge this move of DC Lahore in the court.
