London: A new study has found that cooking on gas is more harmful to health than living in a polluted city.
According to scientists, TV chefs use alternatives to electric stoves, but this creates nitrogen dioxide and particulate matter (particles in traffic smoke).
These vapors damage the lungs and can enter the bloodstream, increasing the risk of heart disease, cancer and Alzheimer’s.
Children and the elderly are more at risk from these stoves, while according to a study, gas stoves pollute the air at home more than busy highways.
According to a New Scientist report, children in the study went to school with pollution monitors in their backpacks.
Professor Frank Kelly of Imperial College London said that children were more exposed to pollution indoors than outside in the evening when their parents were cooking.
According to another study, gas stoves cause asthma in one out of every eight children in the United States.
Professor Kelly, who was not part of the research, said these stoves are a major contributor to indoor air pollution. These can cause and worsen asthma and other health problems.
This problem is compounded in homes that do not have adequate ventilation.
