Research presented by the Lancet Commission states that the number of prostate cancer cases is expected to increase from 1.4 million in 2020 to 2.9 million by 2040. An increase of up to 85 percent in deaths due to the disease is also expected in this period, about seven lakh deaths.
According to the researchers, the increase in deaths and diagnoses cannot be avoided, with the majority of cases expected to occur in low- and middle-income countries.
According to research, factors such as an aging population and increasing age will play a role in older people being affected by this disease.
The main risk factors for prostate cancer include being older than 50 years and having a family history of the disease. Therefore, the researchers say, it will not be possible to stop the increase in cases due to public health measures.
However, the authors call for providing cancer screening programs for early diagnosis in low- and middle-income countries (where a high number of cases are expected to occur).
