Development of a methodology for the diagnosis of brain injury in newborns

London: A new study suggests that a blood test can help determine the cause of brain injury in newborns and help guide the best treatment for them.

A study conducted at Imperial College London examined children who had suffered brain injury caused by hypoxia (lack of oxygen).

The research found that these markers in the blood could pinpoint the cause of the injury and tell doctors whether the child should benefit from ‘cooling treatment’ (a common treatment used to heal a brain injury). Will or not?

The findings could lead to the development of a simple test to quickly diagnose and treat brain injuries in newborns, the researchers said.

The study included children from poor and middle-income countries as well as high-income countries.

According to the researchers, the findings suggest that brain injury in newborns in poor countries may have multiple causes, including poor nutrition and infection.

While in rich countries, one of the reasons for this is the occurrence of complications during childbirth.

Professor Sudin Thiel, who led the study, said the gene patterns in children from low- and middle-income countries were similar to those with sleep apnea, suggesting that children in utero Maternal and perinatal periods undergo hypoxia.
