The World Bank says that 6 million people across the country are facing food insecurity as a result of heavy rains and worst floods in Pakistan during the last monsoon.
In the Food Security Update Report issued by the World Bank, it has been stated that hundreds of people lost their lives as a result of the flood, millions of livestock were also killed, while crops standing on 9.4 million acres of land were destroyed, while the most The damage has been done in Balochistan and Sindh.
The report said that the price of food items has increased in the country after the floods, the inflation rate of food items was 8.3% in October 2021, which increased to 15.3% in March 2022 and 31.7% in September after the flood.
According to the report, there is a trend of increasing inflation in South Asia due to environmental and climatic factors, decrease in foreign exchange reserves and depreciation of local currencies due to which food prices are also increasing. Inflation rate increased by 7.9% in Bangladesh, 7.4% in Nepal and 35.5% in Pakistan, while in Sri Lanka this rate has been recorded up to 64.4%.
According to the report, during the last monsoon, some areas of the South Asian region received much more rain than usual while others received less, due to which food production has been interrupted, the effects of which are now coming to light.
