England: When doctors advise patients to lose weight, taking an optimistic approach makes weight loss more likely.
According to media reports, researchers found that if a doctor presented obesity treatment as a “golden opportunity,” the affected person was more likely to lose weight by following the doctor’s recommended program. .
The researchers compared a physician’s enthusiastic attitude toward weight loss with overemphasis on the negative consequences of obesity or a neutral attitude.
For the study, a team from the University of Oxford analyzed recordings of conversations between doctors and patients in 38 primary care clinics that included 12 weeks of doctors’ behavior-based treatment of obesity. The researchers also evaluated the doctors’ language and the patients’ cooperation in the treatment. Patients have reported that the therapist’s words and tone matter a lot to them.
