Researchers at the UK’s University of Surrey have created a water-based oxygen-generating and carbon dioxide-distilling paint that incorporates a strain of cyanobacteria. Scientists have named this paint as ‘green living paint’.
The ability of the bacteria added to the paint to withstand harsh environments enables the new paint to be used in a variety of places, including space.
The increase in greenhouse gas emissions and the resulting climate crisis have forced scientists to think about this new innovation, while green, blue, algae, i.e. cyanobacteria, are new green materials due to their waste-synthesizing properties. is being recommended as an ingredient for
Cyanobacteria convert carbon dioxide into organic compounds through photosynthesis and can do this very efficiently in unfavorable environments. Moreover, they grow rapidly and can be genetically modified.
According to Suzy Hingley Wilson, the author of the study, we need environmentally friendly and sustainable materials in view of the increase in the amount of greenhouse gases, especially carbon dioxide, and the scarcity of water due to the rising global temperature.
He said that technologically robust and ready-to-use ‘living paints’ could help tackle these challenges while reducing water consumption.
