Washington: A study led by researchers in the US has found that a drug used to treat high blood pressure can prevent post-traumatic headaches.
Murray Riskand, director of the VA Northwest Mental Illness Research, Education and Clinical Center in Seattle, Washington, and senior author of the study, explained that there are few treatment options for these types of post-accident headaches, according to media reports.
Post-traumatic headaches are the most common long-term consequence of mild traumatic brain injuries among veterans and active-duty service members, causing significant distress and problems at home and work, he said.
The FDA approved prazosin for the treatment of high blood pressure in 1976. It was widely used to treat nightmares associated with PTSD and ailments such as an enlarged prostate. An earlier study by members of the research group showed that a drug called prazosin could reduce headaches caused by traumatic brain injury (TBI).
