34 thousand SIMs involved in forgery were blocked, revealed in the meeting


The meeting of the National Assembly Standing Committee on Information Technology was held in the absence of Chairman Mir Khan Muhammad Jamali under the chairmanship of Member Committee Naz Baloch.

In the meeting, Naz Baloch said that even in big cities there are problems with mobile phone service, there is a need to improve the quality of mobile and internet service.

He further said that the mobile phone companies have increased the call and internet rates.

The members of the committee said that there is no internet service even in Parliament Lodges, companies are extracting money from people’s pockets and Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) is silent.

The committee members further said that thousands of frauds are being done through mobile SIMs.

PTA officials told the meeting that 34 thousand SIMs involved in forgery have been blocked, action is taken on complaints related to quality service.

Officials added that mobile companies and banks conduct fraud awareness campaigns through SIMs.

In the meeting, the telecom industry informed about its problems and said that in the recent economic crisis, the profit rate of mobile phone companies has decreased extremely.

It was informed in the meeting that difficulties have increased due to increase in electricity rates, commercial tariff is being charged to the telecom sector despite the recognition of the industry, launching of 5G will not be possible in difficult situation.

Briefing on behalf of the telecom industry, a telecom representative said that mobile phone companies donate 1.5% of their annual profits to the USF.

The representative further said that due to non-opening of LCs, there are difficulties in the import of telecom equipment and has given recommendations to the federal government to solve the problems.

Member IT Ministry told the committee that illegal SIMs are the cause of financial crimes, PTA has started the process of live biometric verification to prevent fake SIMs.

Dummy fingerprints will no longer activate SIMs, infrastructure sharing and spectrum reforming frameworks are being finalized, which will reduce costs for telecom companies.
