Diagnosing Disease in X-rays, Artificial Intelligence Fails to Compete with Doctors

Copenhagen: A new study has shown that artificial intelligence cannot be relied upon to identify common lung diseases in chest X-rays.

According to media reports, the researchers pitted 72 radiologists against four artificial intelligence tools in analyzing more than 2,000 X-rays. Human experts outperformed artificial intelligence tools in the experiment, according to findings published in the journal Radiology.

Chest radiography is a common diagnostic method but always requires significant training and experience to correctly identify the disease, said Dr. Louis Plessner, a radiology PhD researcher and lead researcher at Herlew and Jentoft Hospital in Copenhagen, Denmark. .

Plessner added in the news release that while artificial intelligence tools are increasingly being approved for use in radiology departments, they are no longer needed in a true clinical sense. Artificial intelligence can assist radiologists in chest X-rays, but their diagnostic accuracy is not yet reliable.
