Islamabad: The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has resumed the process of registration of transgenders after almost three months.
It may be noted that after the Federal Sharia Court ruled against the provisions of the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act, 2018, NADRA had stopped the National Identity Card (NIC) registration of transgenders.
Apart from this, in July this year, the Secretary General of the People’s Party, Farhatullah Babar, challenged the decision of the Sharia Court in the Sharia Appellate Bench of the Supreme Court.
NADRA, withdrawing its earlier order to stop registration, issued notification for registration of transgenders. NADRA Public Engagement Director Rida Qazi confirmed the above development and said that the authority has issued instructions to resume printing of X-category CNI for transgenders.
He said that initially this process was stopped after the decision of the Federal Shariah Court but now it has started again while the matter is still in the Supreme Court. He said that NADRA is constitutionally bound to print special identity cards for transgenders after the recommendation of its external legal advisory wing.
