People exercise more for mental health than physical health, survey

London: A survey has revealed that people’s growing trend towards exercise may be due to its mental health benefits rather than physical health care.

A survey of more than 2,200 people in the UK asked what made them commit to exercise. In response, more than half (54 percent) of people said that exercise helps them maintain their mental health.

In comparison, 46 percent of people said that the thought of beautifying their body motivates them to exercise.

Exercising causes the body to release endorphins, hormones known to induce a ‘feel good’ feeling.

A survey conducted by a non-profit organization found that three-quarters (75 percent) of people were unaware of the recommended amount of exercise they should be getting. Rather, they believed that the amount of moderate exercise was much lower than the recommended amount.

According to the guidelines given by the British Chief Medical Officers, older people should get 150 minutes of moderate to vigorous exercise (such as brisk walking or cycling) every week.

While about 40 percent believed that 90 minutes of moderate to vigorous exercise per week was sufficient.
