Crackdown continues across the country against dollar smuggling, hundreds of people arrested

According to the authorities, since January this year, FIA has arrested a total of 257 raids and 361 suspects across the country during the crackdown against the elements involved in illegal currency trading and currency exchange. 250 cases were registered against the accused doing illegal business.

30 inquiries were also registered against the suspects involved in illegal business of Hindi reference and currency. 26 more cases were registered after the allegations were proved during the enquiries.

During the crackdown, a total of 4 lakh 78 thousand 620 US dollars were recovered from January this year, while other foreign currency worth 177 million rupees was also recovered during the raids. A total of more than 3 billion rupees worth of foreign currency was recovered during the crackdown since January.

In the same way, from August 2023, more speed was brought against those doing illegal business of reference handi and currency exchange, and from August 15, 48 raids were conducted in the crackdown against those doing illegal business of reference handi and currency. 59 accused were arrested.

48 cases were registered against those doing illegal trading of currency and 11 inquiries were also registered against those doing illegal business of currency. 9 more cases were also registered after the allegations were proved in the enquiries. A total of 1 lakh 6 thousand 800 US dollars have been recovered during the crackdown against the illegal currency dealers from August 15 till now.

A total of more than 20 million rupees worth of other foreign currency was also recovered, while a total of more than 150 million rupees worth of foreign currency was recovered during the raids in about 26 days from August 15 till now.

Officials said that special raiding teams have been formed at the level of zones and circles of FIA across the country, the raiding teams are conducting raids against agents involved in buying and selling of illegal currency based on secret information. Those involved in the smuggling of foreign currency will be punished to the fullest extent of the law and intelligence-based operations will continue against the dealers involved in handi quoting.

The officials further said that the data of the dealers involved in the illegal exchange has been seized and on the special instructions of Director General FIA Mohsin Hasan Butt, all resources are being used to arrest the accused while intelligence-based. Assistance is also being sought from other institutions in the operations.
