New Delhi: After Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s placard at the G20 summit in India read ‘Bharat’ instead of ‘India’, speculation has gathered that the South Asian country is about to change its name.

It should be noted that even before the colonial era, India was called by the names of Bharat, Bharata and Hindustan, while the use of these names is common at the public and official level.

Speculation about changing India’s name to Bharat started in recent days when President Draupadi Marmo wrote herself as ‘President of India’ in invitations to a dinner to welcome G20 leaders.

Modi announced the summit in New Delhi and the placard he was sitting on had ‘Bharat’ written on it, while the G20 logo read ‘Bharat’ in Hindi and ‘India’ in English.

Placards marked ‘India’ have also been used in the past.
