Tokyo: Two Japanese companies have created special face washes and lotions for astronauts that are specially designed for the low-weight environment.
According to a company called Paula and Anna, their products can be used by people living on the International Space Station (ISS). Next year, Japanese astronaut Kimia Yui will carry both products to the ISS. Space cosmetics, however, have been named ‘cosmology’ (kunyat).
The Japanese space agency (JAXA) had told Japanese companies that the environment there is very dry and resource-poor. Liquids in vacuum are very difficult to handle and use. This is why face washes and lotions are made semi-solid.
Earlier, several companies also developed space cosmetics products, with Estee Lauder leading the way and creating a skin serum after a contract with NASA. In 2021, another company called InStyle also created foundation, mascara, lipstick and Vaseline for astronauts.
According to Japanese companies, their products can improve the lives of scientists in space. Both companies have said they have also been tested in space-like conditions. However, ‘makeup and cosmetics for astronauts’ will go on sale in October.
