Karachi: Dr. Darnaz Jamal has said that it is not right to administer mega platelets unnecessarily to dengue patients.

The Secretary of Sindh Blood Transfusion Authority, Dr. Darnaz Jamal, has said in a conversation with Express that it is not correct to apply mega platelets unnecessarily to dengue patients. Medical experts should refrain from recommending mega platelets to every dengue patient, doctors in private hospitals should also administer mega platelets units only as needed.

Secretary of Sindh Blood Transfusion Authority Dr. Darnar Jamal said that in view of the increase in dengue cases, SBTA has mobilized all the blood banks. and prevent the loss of platelets.

Only a few blood banks have the Apheresis Machine to make mega units

Few blood banks in Karachi including Hussaini Blood Bank, Aga Khan Blood Bank, Liaquat National Blood Bank, Ziauddin Hospital Blood Bank, Jinnah and Civil Hospital Blood Banks have A-pheresis machine with the help of which mega unit platelets are prepared. While the kits of A Feresis machine are also quite expensive, its kits are being sold for 30 to 34 thousand in the market. These kits are not reusable after being used once.

Some profiteers were found involved in buying and selling substandard platelets

In the event of dengue virus becoming an epidemic, when fear spreads among the citizens, some profiteers take advantage of it, and legal action will be taken against anyone involved in buying and selling substandard platelets.

Mega platelets should be administered only on the advice of medical experts because in about 11 days the effect of the dengue virus is over and the body has the ability to make its own platelets.

Not every patient needs mega-platelets, says Dr. Natasha

In this regard, hematologist Dr. Natasha Ali of Aga Khan University Hospital said that every dengue patient does not need mega platelets, if the patient’s platelets are less than 10,000 and they have continuous bleeding internally or externally. They are prescribed mega platelets only if they are flowing, often due to the condition of the patients, random donor platelets are not effective for them, in this situation, doctors are forced to prescribe mega platelets.

Mega unit 46 thousand and random donor unit 2800 rupees

A bag of mega unit platelets is being charged Rs 46,000 and Rs 2,800 for a random donor platelet unit, the main difference being that mega unit platelets are prepared from the same individual’s platelets while Random donor platelets require 5 to 7 people.

One mega unit is equivalent to 5 to 7 units of random donor platelets, a unit of random donor platelets is capable of increasing 10,000 platelets, while a mega unit of platelets is capable of increasing 50,000 to 70,000 platelets.

Blood donations are very low in Pakistan

Doctors should inform the citizens that if the patient is prescribed platelets by the doctor, then they can also apply random donor platelets, there is no need for mega platelets. were higher than but still anxious to administer megaplatelets to treated patients.

A person should have an average of 120,000 platelets and if someone gets extra platelets due to the negligence and carelessness of the citizens, the blood will clot inside his body, as long as the doctor is treating the patient. They are conducting CBC on daily basis understanding the sensitivity of the matter.

7 manual units are equal to one mega unit of platelets, says Dr. Zeeshan

Hematologist Dr. Zeeshan Hussain of Nimat Begum Hamdard Hospital said that 6 to 7 manual units of platelets are considered equal to one mega unit of platelets, no research has highlighted that the patient should be given mega platelets only. , the aim is to compensate for the lack of platelets in the body of the affected person, now apply 6 manual units or direct one mega unit.

Both have the same thing, if the patient’s condition is more critical, then doctors recommend mega units to make up for the deficiency in a short time, otherwise if the manual units also administer platelets, there is no problem.
