Karachi: Like other parts of the country, the price of sugar in Karachi has gone out of control and its rates in Shahr Quaid have reached Rs 175 per kg.
Farid Qureshi, chairman of Karachi Retail Grocers Association, said that the wholesale price of sugar per kilogram has increased by a total of 40 rupees during the last week.
According to Farid Qureshi, as a result of this increase, the wholesale price of sugar per kilogram has increased from 125 rupees to 165 rupees, while the retail price of sugar per kilogram has also increased by 40 rupees to 175 rupees.
Farid Qureshi said that after giving permission to export sugar, the prices of sugar are being increased by the mafia on a daily basis.
He said that mafias have created artificial scarcity in the wholesale markets by accumulating sugar reserves in their warehouses.
He demanded the caretaker government to take immediate crackdown on the Chinese mafia as the sale of daily commodities has also decreased due to hyperinflation.
