Beijing: A long-term study has found that exposure to extreme heat waves, extreme cold waves, and air pollution particles can double the incidence of heart attacks.
According to a report published in the journal Circulation, between 2015 and 2020, 202,000 people died of heart attacks in just one province of China. It was found that these deaths were more observed when either the heat wave was at its peak. Or PM 2.5, a specific type of airborne pollutant, was higher. These deaths are seen more in elderly men and women.
According to experts, extreme heat and air pollution make this condition the most dangerous. Previous research has shown that extreme heat increases the risk of heart attacks, but the effect is greater in the elderly and women than in the young.
Although the intensity, duration and incidence of heat waves are increasing worldwide. However, the associated heart attack risks have not been seriously studied until now. Now Chinese experts from various institutions have made a detailed review of it. In this regard, a vast database has been created.
In this context, daily temperatures in Jiangsu, China, were recorded from 2015 to 2020. Then hospital emergencies and deaths were reviewed daily.
Experts have come to the conclusion that the incidence of heart attacks and even fatal heart attacks doubles on days of heat wave and certain air pollution particles. Then the elders are severely affected by it.
